The City of El Cerrito invites you to enjoy “12 Wind Sculptures” the San Pablo Avenue Streetscape Public Art Project by artists Jonathan Russell and Saori Ide. The sculptures are located in pairs or trios along the length of San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito and are intended to enhance and enliven the Avenue. As part of the City’s Art in Public Places Program, a budget of $100,000 was allocated within the San Pablo Avenue Streetscape Project for public art. In 2009, following a competitive process, the City of El Cerrito commissioned artists Jonathan Russell and Saori Ide to create public art for San Pablo Avenue. The artists created “12 Wind Sculptures” - a series of abstract metal wind sculptures mounted on light poles along San Pablo Avenue. The City’s Arts and Culture Commission approved the final design proposal in March 2012 and the installation was completed in 2013. About the work, the artists said: “The shapes and the composition of each form are uniquely designed and placed in the center of an open circle. Our idea is to create playful and eye-catching sculptures that both pedestrians and drivers alike can enjoy. These wind sculptures will provide the City of El Cerrito with a cohesive and vibrant artwork that will create a pedestrian friendly environment and visually tie together the long stretch of San Pablo Avenue, from the North end to the South.” To learn more about the City of El Cerrito Art in Public Places Program, please visit www.el-cerrito.org/windsculptures or call the staff liaison to the Arts and Culture Commission at [PHONE REDACTED]. 12 Wind Sculptures by Saori Ide and Jonathan Russell Sculpture Locations on San Pablo Avenue: near Carlson Blvd. near Manila Ave. & Bayview Ave. near Potrero Ave. near Hill Street & Eastshore Blvd. near Conlon Ave.
