Agenda Item No. 5(C) CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL CERRITO PROCLAMATION May 10-19, 2013 as Affordable Housing Week WHEREAS affordable housing provides opportunity and stability to individuals and families, and brings diversity and vitality to communities and can help build a strong economy and sustainable environment by allowing people to live in healthy communities near their jobs; and WHEREAS too many residents in the larger community live in overcrowded and substandard housing or are homeless, and many are still impacted by foreclosures and rising rents; and WHEREAS quality affordable housing encourages family success by providing a strong foundation for economic stability and educational achievement and has been shown to improve public safety and encourage residents to get involved in and give back to their community; and WHEREAS quality affordable homes are a solution to homelessness, and provide services and support to vulnerable residents including seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities; and WHEREAS the City of El Cerrito has supported the development of over 172 units of high quality affordable housing, approved the future development of 57 units of multifamily and special needs housing as part of the proposed Ohlone Gardens housing development, and is considering the development of 63 units of affordable senior housing as part of the Eden Housing San Pablo Avenue Mixed-Use Senior Apartments; and WHEREAS local and statewide public and political will to support affordable housing is even more crucial after sequestration and the elimination of Redevelopment; and WHEREAS East Bay Housing Organizations (EBHO) has organized Affordable Housing Week for 17 years and will feature 20 events acknowledging the need for and contributions of affordable housing; NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of El Cerrito hereby proclaims the week of May 10th – 19th, 2013 as Affordable Housing Week in the City of El Cerrito to raise awareness about the importance of affordable housing for families and communities and encourages residents to participate in Affordable Housing Week activities and recognize how affordable housing can help create better futures for families, individual and communities.
