Agenda Item No. 5(B) EL CERRITO CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION D(?dication of the Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker WHEREAS, the Blue Star Memorial Program was developed by the National Garden Clubs of America in 1945 to pay tribute to the Armed Forces that defended our country during World War II and expanded over time; and WHEREAS, the Blue Star Memorial Program honors all service men and women who have served, are serving or will serve in all branches of the United States Military including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and the historical United States Merchant Marine; and WHEREAS, the Blue Star Memorial Markers pay tribute to all the Armed Forces which defend our country, act as a visible and long-lasting reminder of support for the Armed Forces of the USA and is a solemn monument that represents a commitment that the service and sacrifice of these men and women will never be forgotten. Markers also unite the community, foster patriotism, and join together many diverse groups; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of El Cerrito, acknowledges the caring efforts of the El Cerrito Garden Club in establishing Blue Star Memorial Markers and hereby commemorates the dedication of a Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker at the dock alongside the SS Red Oak Victory in honor of those who have served this Country. NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of El Cerrito hereby recognizes the importance of the solemn dedication of the Blue Star Memorial By-Way Marker on May 28, 2012 on the occasion of Memorial Day in Richmond and encourages all residents to join in honoring and remembering all of our brave service men and women, past and currently serving and pay homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on the Country's behalf.
