EL CERRITO COMMITTEE ON AGING June 2, 2015 1 Agenda Item No. 4(B) ---PAGE BREAK--- MISSION STATEMENT • Committee was formed to document and advise the Council about the needs of older and disabled residents. • Develop comprehensive plans for implementing programs to address these needs by: 1) establishing liaisons with other interested groups; 2) utilizing the resource of talents offered by El Cerrito’s older and/or disabled adults 2 ---PAGE BREAK--- MISSION STATEMENT • Formulate presentations at the Senior Center and at Committee meetings that are helpful to the well-being of our focus community members. • Determine its own internal organization, election of chairperson, regular meeting dates and places, and other procedural actions as may be appropriate. 3 ---PAGE BREAK--- BACKGROUND ON THE COMMITTEE • Members of the Committee are appointed by the City Council upon the Committee’s recommendation. • Membership is open to any and all interested adult residents of El Cerrito. • Must attend three consecutive meetings before being considered for membership. 4 ---PAGE BREAK--- BACKGROUND ON THE COMMITTEE • Regular meetings occur at El Cerrito City Hall Council Chambers at 3:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month and are open to the public. • The Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and a Member at Large are elected by Committee members annually and serve during the year as the Executive Committee. 5 ---PAGE BREAK--- BACKGROUND ON THE COMMITTEE • Currently elected officers for 2015-16 are: Chairperson: Shirley Cressey Vice-Chair: Nola Veganes Chavez Secretary: Kim Marlia Members at Large: Karen Christian; Callie Major Additional Members: Mark Guthrie; Kimi Honda; Janet James; Dr. Pansy Kwong; Willa Sudduth; Joanna Kim Selby; Vera Gibbs Winston; Jennifer Haller; Steve Lipson and Kenneth Epley 6 ---PAGE BREAK--- BACKGROUND ON THE COMMITTEE • Several members of the Committee can act as representatives to other agencies within the County, such as the Area Agency on Aging Advisory Council, County Health Committee, West County Coalition, and Eskaton Hazel Shirley Manor, to name a few. 7 ---PAGE BREAK--- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES The Committee on Aging deals with the immediate concerns of residents and supports the improvement of their quality of life. When appropriate, recommendations for action are made to the City Council. The Committee, with Council support, has established specific long-term goals: 8 ---PAGE BREAK--- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES • Affordable housing options for older and disabled residents. • Adequate space and facilities for and the provision of qualifying programs and service for seniors. • Improved accessible public transportation and paratransit services for persons unable to use public transit facilities. 9 ---PAGE BREAK--- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES • Increased support services to assist frail older adults and their families both within and outside of their homes. • Continue the Guest Speaker Presentations. 10 ---PAGE BREAK--- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES In pursuit of its goals the Committee has the assistance of the Senior Services Supervisor, who attends all of the meetings of the Committee and provides it with current information on the status of available programs and facilities. 11 ---PAGE BREAK--- GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Together with the Senior Services Supervisor, the Committee continuously evaluates the services being provided and makes suggestions and recommendations pertaining to such services. 12 ---PAGE BREAK--- ACCOMPLISHMENTS The Committee has guided the development of El Cerrito’s network of programs and services for our older and disabled residents. These include: • Worked with post office to install a mail box on one way street so seniors would not have to exit vehicle to drop off mail. 13 ---PAGE BREAK--- ACCOMPLISHMENTS • Worked with Public Works to have a “Stop Ahead” sign at intersection where stop sign is blocked by tree. • Presented guest speakers on a variety of topics, including ways to make your house safer to navigate; planning for future care of aging loved ones; easy-to-use gadgets for the home; scam alerts; elder health issues. 14 ---PAGE BREAK--- 15 ---PAGE BREAK--- 16 ---PAGE BREAK--- 17
