Agenda Item No. 4(A) EL CERRITO CITY COUNCIL PROCLAMATION Honoring Sergeant Shawn Maples on his Recognition as the 2011 Special Olympics- Northern California Volunteer of the Year WHEREAS, Sergeant Shawn Maples was a founding organizer of the Bike the Bridges fundraiser for Northern California Special Olympics where hundreds of bicyclists rode and they have raised over one hundred thousand dollars for Special Olympics Athletes; and WHEREAS, in addition to the Bike the Bridges event, Sergeant Shawn Maples organizes and participates in the Law Enforcement Torch Run and Tip-a-Cop events to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics ofNorthern California; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Maples has always shown an interest in the community in and surrounding El Cerrito; and WHEREAS, Sergeant Maples' actions are aligned with his values, tenants of community service, public service, and the top values of the El Cerrito Police Department; and WHEREAS, the established bar for excellence in volunteerism and service has been raised by Sergeant Maples. NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City ofEl Cerrito hereby commends Sergeant Shawn Maples as the 2011 Volunteer of the Year for Special Olympics- Northem California and recognizes Sergeant Maples as an example to the Police Department, other Police Officers, and Public Service at its best.
