The City of El Cerrito Public Works Department Invites applications for the position of Part Time Temporary Maintenance Worker - Entry Public Works Department – Operations + Environmental Services Division Part-time Temporary/Seasonal Positions/No benefits Compensation: Maintenance Worker - Entry $18.92 - $22.99 per hour, depending on qualifications, education and experience. Position Description: Under supervision of the Maintenance Superintendent, Operations + Environmental Services Division Manager, and Maintenance Leadworker, and other Full Time Maintenance Workers, these positions provide assistance to Operations + Environmental Services Division staff in performing maintenance functions in the City of El Cerrito. These positions are seasonal and assigned up to 20-25 hours per week, and will terminate effective October 31, 2014. Duties and Responsibilities: Typical job duties are: • Maintain landscaped areas, recreation and play areas, street islands and medians including water, weed, trim, renovate, fertilize shrubs, trees and flower beds; rake leaves, clean walks, fields, courts and other facilities; and pick up rubbish and paper, and perform general grounds cleaning. • Plant and maintain trees, flowers, and shrub; prepare ground around plants and shrubs. • Operate maintenance equipment for a variety of maintenance operations. • Use personal protective equipment, including traffic cones and barricades around work areas to insure safety of workers and public. • Participate in moving and installing park and recreational equipment • Perform work in emergency situations as required. • Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards. Knowledge, skills and abilities: • Ability to conduct one’s self in a professional manner. • Uses and purposes of general maintenance tools and light equipment. • Safe work practices. • Learn to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in a variety of construction and maintenance activities. • Understand and carry out oral and written directions. • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, including other city staff and the public. ---PAGE BREAK--- • Ability to function effectively under direct supervision and develop effective working relationships with fellow City Employees and the public; Experience and Education: • Some work experience in heavy labor is highly desirable. • Formal or informal education at a level which provides the ability to read and write at a level required by the job. Additional specialized training in heavy construction methods is highly desirable. • Possession or ability to obtain by date of hire, a valid Class C California Driver's License • Methods, techniques and tools and the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of public works and parks facilities. • Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work. • Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner. • Work independently and effectively in the absence of supervision. • Use and operate, in a safe and efficient manner, hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required to perform the assigned work. • Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints. • Assist in the training and supervision of others and in the safe use of tools and equipment. Additional Requirements: • Appropriate clearance from background check/finger printing. • Proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
