FREE “UnWaste” Recycling Collection Event for Electronics, Textiles, and Microwaves T he City of El Cerrito contracts with Universal Waste Management, Inc. (UnWaste) a California State approved recycler, to hold collection events for electronic waste. UnWaste will unload your car for you – it’s fast, easy and the right thing to do. Recycle TVs and computer monitors, computers and accessories, stereos and music equipment, VCR & DVD players, toner cartridges, printers, fax machines, copiers, phone equipment, cell phones, MP3 players, & more for free! You may also pay to recycle microwaves for UnWaste will also be accepting textiles, clothes, shoes and linens for free. Batteries, fluorescent bulbs and tubes, paints and chemicals, and other hazardous wastes cannot be accepted during this event. The City of El Cerrito welcomes volunteers to help pull weeds at Baxter creek, remove invasive scotch broom from the Hillside Nature Area or along Moeser Lane, pick up litter along the Ohlone Greenway, tidy parks, and promote a healthy environment in El Cerrito! Volunteers are also needed to assist with on- the-day registration, lunch and photography. Gloves and bags will be provided. Please bring your own water/beverage to the worksite and consider walking, biking, or carpooling. Like previous years, the City expects hundreds of volunteers to participate. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to register in advance using the form at right, or online at www.el-cerrito.org/earthday. Day of registration is also available from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Community Center. This year, celebrate Earth Day in El Cerrito with us and receive a FREE Chinook Book (worth $100s in coupons) from El Cerrito Natural Grocery! Join the City of El Cerrito in celebrating the opening of the new LEED-certified Recycling and Environmental Resource Center on Earth Day, Sunday April 22, 2012. The dedication and open house will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Center, 7501 Schmidt Lane. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a special activity for kids. Come see the new Administration Building, Exchange Zone, Recycling Drop-off area and Operations areas and learn about the green features of this new community resource! Drop-off recycling operations and other functions of the new facility will begin sometime in April - see the City’s website at www.ecenvironment.org for specific dates and details once they become available. In addition to all previously collected items, the City will begin collecting new recyclable or reusable materials, including CFLs, pharmaceuticals, medical sharps, all electronics and components, carpet, plate glass, school and art supplies, used cooking oil, EPS foam, used packaging materials, milk cartons, cotton textiles, bicycles, food bank donations, used building materials and household items, corks and more!
