Date: January 3, 2012 Special City Council Meeting 7:00p.m. To: From: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council Cheryl Morse, City Cler~ Subject: Commission Interviews CONSIDERATION OF APPOINTMENT TO THE MOSQUITO & VECTOR CONTROL DISTRICT Richard Mank has served as the City Council's appointee to the Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District for several years. His term expires January 2, 2012. Mr. Mank has confirmed his interest in serving another four year term as a District Trustee. Staff has advertised the vacancy widely. No other applications have been received for this position. JANUARY 3 INTERVIEW SCHEDULE Candidates listed below are scheduled for interview this evening: 7:00p.m. Gabriel Quinto [HRC 1st, COA 2nd, PC 3rd] 7:15p.m. Kim Marlia [CSC 1st and only] 7:30p.m. Robert Abele [EQC 1st, HRC 2nd, ACC 3rd] 7:45p.m. 1 0 Minute Break 7:55p.m AI Miller [CSOC 1st and only] 8:05p.m. Lynne Kessler [CSOC 1st and only] 8:15p.m. 5 Minute Break 8:20p.m. Michael Aaroninan [CSC 1st, PRC 2nd, CPC 3rd] 8:30p.m. Eric Luttrell [CSC 1st and only] 8:40p.m. Deliberation BACKGROUND Staff has attempted to design this evening's interview schedule to facilitate appointments to a variety of boards and commissions. Additional interviews will need to be scheduled with the City Council prior to the January 17 or February 6, 2012 meetings. ---PAGE BREAK--- ARTS & CULTURE COMMISSION (ACC) Special City Council Meeting Commission Applicant Interviews There are two existing vacancies on this commission for a term ending January 1, 2013. Dianne Brenner has submitted an application and lists the Arts Commission as her first and only choice. Ms. Brenner will be scheduled for interview January 17 or February 6. Robert Abele, scheduled for interview this evening, lists the Arts and Culture Commission as his third choice (EQC 1st, HRC 2nd CITIZENS STREET OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE (CSOC) There are three upcoming vacancies on this committee. Committee members Lynne Kessler and Al Miller will complete their first term and Aurelia Schultz will finish an unexpired term ending on January 1, 2012. All three have applied for a second term. Mr. Miller and Ms. Kessler are scheduled for interview this evening. Ms. Schultz will be scheduled for January 17. CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION (CSC) There are two upcoming vacancies on this commission. Michael Aaronian and Eric Luttrell's first term ends January 1, 2012. Mr. Aaronian has submitted an application listing the CSC as his 1st choice, PRC 2nd, and the CPC as his 3rd choice. He is scheduled for interview this evening. Kim Madia has also submitted an application for consideration and lists this Commission as his 1st and only choice. Mr. Madia is scheduled for an interview this evening. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARD The Economic Development Board has two existing vacancies and one upcoming as of January 1, 2012. Carla Hansen, who was interviewed December 19, has listed EDB as her 3rd choice (PC 1st, F AB 2nd). FINANCIAL ADVISORY BOARD One vacancy exists on this commission. Carla Hansen (PC 1st choice, FAB 2nd, and EDB 3 rd) was interviewed on December 19. HUMAN RELATIONS COMMISSION There are two upcoming vacancies on this commission. Antonio Wong completes his second term and Gabriel Quinto is completing an unexpired term ending on January 1, 2012. Mr. Quinto submitted an application for reappointment listing the HRC as his 1st choice, COA 2nd, and the Planning Commission as his 3rd choice. He is scheduled for interview this evening. PARKS AND RECREATION There is one upcoming vacancy for this Commission. Seth Kaplan's first term expires on January 1, 2012. Mr. Kaplan has submitted an application for reappointment and will be scheduled for interview January 17 or February 6. Michael Aaronian who is scheduled for interview this evening has listed the Parks Commission as his second choice (CSC 1st and CPC 3rd). Sojeila Maria Silva will finish her second term January 1, 2012. Carla Hansen, who was interviewed December 19, lists Planning Commission as her 1st choice, FAB as her 2nd, and EDB 3rd. Richard Mank will expire on January 2, 2012. Trustees can be appointed for a two or four year term. They serve without compensation, but are allowed limited expenses for actual travel in connection with meetings or business of the Board (see enclosed position description). The Board meets on the second Monday night in the month, and occasionally it may be necessary to hold a special board meeting. Trustees also serve on committees which regularly meet between board meetings. All meetings are held at the District office, 155 Mason Circle, Concord, California. Please note each member of the Board appointed from a governing body of a city shall be an elector of the city from which he/she is appointed, and a resident of the city which is in the District (California Health & Safety Code, Section 2242). Please notify our office in writing when an appointment has been made.
