Agenda Item No. 4(A) CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF EL CERRITO EARTH HOUR PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, Earth Hour is an annual global event organized by the World Wildlife Fund that calls on individuals, governments, and businesses around the world to turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour between 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM on Saturday, March 29, 2014; and WHEREAS, the goal of Earth Hour is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better; and WHEREAS, since 2006, more than 100 million people across 152 counties participate annually by switching off their lights, with lights going out at Sydney’s Opera House, Rome’s Coliseum, the Empire State Building, the Golden Gate Bridge, and at other landmarks worldwide; and WHEREAS, the City of El Cerrito is committed to improving the environment and reducing the pollution that causes global warming, and seeks to involve all of its citizens in improving their local and global environment and becoming more aware of the actions they can take to help curb climate change; and WHEREAS, the City of El Cerrito will participate and turn off the City Hall Tower Lights, strive to turn off other non-essential lighting during Earth Hour, and participate in other Earth Hour related activities; and WHEREAS, the City of El Cerrito’s Environmental Quality Committee will co- sponsor a Star Gazing Hour in the Hillside Natural Area for Earth Hour with other El Cerrito citizen groups. NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of El Cerrito hereby proclaims March 29 between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. to be Earth Hour in the City of El Cerrito and calls upon all residents, businesses, and institutions to turn off non-essential lighting for this hour to make a global statement of concern about climate change and demonstrate commitment to finding solutions to climate change.
