Message From The Event Chair Thank you for being here today, for your support and for your participation in celebrating the birthday and legacy of Dr. King. In 1989 after failing for two years to get the City of El Cerrito to recognize the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. birthday, Charles Wilson led members of the El Cerrito Branch NAACP and St. Peter C.M.E. Church to take their request to the streets in their first effort to “Keep The Dream Alive” in the City of El Cerrito. Today we celebrate our 25th “Silver” Anniversary and I am proud that the City observes Dr. King’s birthday and that this event is now a partnership among the City, the West Contra Costa Unified School District, St. Peter C.M.E. and the El Cerrito Branch NAACP. This year’s vision to “Keep the Dream Alive” Remember, Celebrate, Act focus on the power of education. We believe children are our future and we want to continue to keep the dream alive by teaching our children the importance of peace, non- violence, justice and freedom for all mankind. Education about Dr. King’s dream should not fade in our schools, but become a part of our daily lives. I hope the legacy of Dr. King and Nelson Mandela to direct our paths in our efforts to make a difference in the lives of humanity.
