Shreeve, Sr., Chief Building Official Subject: Installation of Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cable Code References Article 334 of the 2017 National Electrical Code and 2019 California Electrical Code - Nonmetallic- Sheathed Cable Types NM, NMC, and NMS Upon the discretion of the Chief Building Official or his designee, nonmetallic-sheathed cable may be installed prior to the building being weather-tight under the following conditions: 1. Cable is to be protected against physical damage per Article 300.4 of the California Electrical Code (CEC). 2. The electrical contractor or the permit applicant will perform a moisture and Tone Test if the cable is exposed to high moisture conditions for an extended period of time and wicking may have occurred, as determined by the Chief Building Official or his designee. 3. Upon request, the electrical contractor or the permit applicant shall perform a moisture and Tone Test on the system in question. The results of the test shall be provided to the Building & Safety Division prior to the rough frame inspection. The certification letter shall include the date of the electrical system installation, date the moisture and Tone Test was performed, and an approval date.
