Shreeve, Sr., Chief Building Official Subject: Water Heaters Code References Chapter 5 of the 2019 California Plumbing Code (CPC), Article 250 of the 2019 California Electrical Code (CEC) and Dublin Municipal Code (DMC) Seismic Provisions (CPC Section 507.2) Water heaters shall be anchored or strapped to resist horizontal displacement due to earthquake motion. Strapping shall be at points within the upper one third (1/3) and lower one-third (1/3) of its vertical dimensions. At the lower point, a minimum distance of four inches shall be maintained above the controls with strapping. For water heaters with a capacity of greater than 75 gallons, an additional (third) set of bracing straps shall be required at mid-height of the water heater. Grounding and Bonding (CEC Art. 250) All piping systems (water and gas) shall be bonded together with a #8 AWG copper, #6 AWG aluminum or #6 copper clad aluminum wire. The point of attachment for the bonding jumper shall be accessible and located within sight of the water heater. Manufacturers’ Installation All water heaters shall be installed per minimum code and per their manufacturers’ installation instructions. All manufacturers’ installation instructions shall be on site.
