Shreeve, Sr., Chief Building Official Subject: Water Hammer in Residential Buildings Code References Section 609.10 of the 2019 California Plumbing Code (not adopted by HCD): Building water supply systems where quick-acting valves are installed are to be provided with water hammer arrester(s) to absorb high pressures resulting from the quick closing of these valves. When installed, water hammer arresters shall be approved mechanical devices in accordance with the applicable standard(s) referenced in Table 1701.1 and shall be installed as close as possible to quick- acting valves. These devices should be installed at the dishwasher, clothes washer, and ice makers. 609.10.1 Mechanical Devices – Where listed mechanical devices are used, the manufacturer’s specifications as to location and method of installation shall be followed.
