For example, discarded needles may expose waste workers to potential needle stick injuries and infection when containers break open inside garbage trucks or nee- dles are mistakenly sent to recycling facilities. Used needles can transmit serious diseases, such as HIV and hepatitis. Residents of the County may use the free Sharps Program provided by Essentia, the City of Superior and Douglas County. Get your free sharps container at the phar- macy at Essentia Su- perior on Tower Avenue, fill it and return the full container to trade for a new one. The hospital/clinic pro- vides disposal and the City and County provide the container. Studies have shown that pharmaceuticals and over the counter drugs are present in our na- tion's water bodies and certain drugs may cause ecological harm. Outdated or unusable drugs that are disposed of by flushing or pouring down a sink, enter the envi- ronment because wastewater treat- ment facilities are not designed to remove them. Storing unused or outdated pre- scriptions creates an opportunity for illicit use. One in five teens report intentionally misusing someone else's prescription drugs to get high. Nearly half say they get the medica- tions from friends and relatives for free, often by raiding the medicine cabinet or by attending "pharming parties" where teens barter legal drugs and get high. Use our free collection on June 30th! Remember: IF IT IS RECHARGEABLE, IT IS RECYCLABLE! FREE RECYCLING FOR RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES AND CELL PHONES! RURAL D.C. ROCKS RECYCLING! Questions often heard regarding recycling are about the value of the program and is it really worth the effort and money. A new “environmental calculator” allows us to look at our recy- cling in a very tangible way. Below are the results for 2011 for recycling in rural Douglas County vs. throwing it all in the land- fill. It takes into account the cost of recycling vs. using the landfill in addition to the environmental savings. In 2011 Douglas County saved over $51,230 by recycling 1,175 tons of material instead of landfilling it. That also saved 3,525 cubic yards of landfill space. By recycling over 755 tons of mixed paper our residents saved over 12,841 trees. Recycling over 21 tons of aluminum saved the energy equivalent of 64,156 gallons of gasoline. We can make those numbers even better. See www.recyclemorewi.org to find out how you can recycle more. PLASTIC UPDATE!! Douglas County and the City of Superior now accept plastics that are numbered 1-7. How to Prepare Your Recyclables GLASS– Rinse clean and remove and recycle the lid. Lids can be recycled separately.
