1 Douglas County Weekly Snowmobile and Winter ATV Trail Report Information provided by Club Members of the Northwest Trails Association and compiled by the Douglas County Forestry Department. UPDATED 01/03/2014 As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property... please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails. Please note that on certain trails only segments of that trail may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs report in with trails they have checked. Thank you. SE Quadrant With this past weekend’s warm temps and increased traffic, trails have been well ridden, but remain in good early season conditions. Jack Pine Riders trails include Corridors 35, 41 and trails 7, 27, 27b, 27c, 5, and 541 According to the National Weather Service, an arctic low is expected to keep temperatures in our area below zero from Sunday through Thursday, with dangerously low temps and wind-chills in the overnight hours. All grooming operations will move to daytime hours. Please exercise extra caution during this time. Trail 41N from the Wild Rivers Trail to the Tom Green Road remains closed at this time due to unfrozen swamp conditions. This segment is scheduled for additional work on Saturday please check for updates Please use the Tom Green Road Route as an alternative until the swamp is froze and packed.. All other trails will be open, and scheduled for grooming, and are anticipated to be in very good condition by January 4th. NE Quadrant Updated Early Thursday All Brule River Rider Trails are open ---PAGE BREAK--- 2 Most clubs in our area are having a difficult time freezing down swamps. Please help out by widening the trails in wetlands We have two areas on Trail 4 west of Hawthorne we are unable to access with groomers. In light traffic areas we are finding as little as 2-3 inches of ice under the snow in the swamps. ATVS are advised not to venture off of any groomed surface in wet areas Lakes are improving slowly. (reports from Lakes, Nebagamon & St Croix) Conditions All BRR groomed trails are in very good early season condition. Watch for overhanging branches and hidden buried logs and limbs in the snow Grooming: All BRR trails have been groomed since Sunday Afternoon except the 3 miles of Trail 4, east of the warming shack. Trail 1: Conditions on the Bayfield section are unknown at this time. Trail 4: West of Hawthorne. Groomed to south of Hwy L except for the 1/4 mile of swamp off of Hwy 53. and about 3 miles of Trail 4 not groomed east the warming shack at the Jct of 4 and 41 Use Caution around logging operations south of Hwy S on Trail 27 Use Caution around a large logging operation north of Rifle Range Road on Trail 27A Some sleds tracks on Lake St Croix. Watch out for slush under virgin snow With the exception of the two sections of Trail 4 west of Hawthorne we are moving into a regular grooming schedule. Please help us out by packing the trails in wet areas. Contrary to popular belief, swamps are not frozen. The snow must be well packed to freeze swamps down hard enough to hold up groomers. NW Quadrant All Trails in this quadrant are open and were groomed last week, except for the crosstown route. Grooming operations have been suspended due to extreme cold. The grooming will resume when the weather breaks (anticipated to be Friday). SW Quadrant ---PAGE BREAK--- 3 Cozy Corner Trails update SW Douglas County - Trail 9, 925, 935 in decent condition, still a little slush in swampy areas, expect to groom midweek. Trail 5 has been cleared and gates open from the groomer shed (Highway 35/West Highway T) to East Highway T - 5a has been cleared. Will work on 5 north of T this week - there are a lot of trees down on the trail again. We are experiencing people going around the gates…when the gates are closed the trail is closed NW Burnett County - Trails 151, 118 have been well packed over the past few days, expect to groom early this week.All other winter recreational trails remain closed at this time. Club members are working on trail preparation but have run into issues with wet areas not being frozen at this time. Trail 3 Trail 3 grooming is on going, Mon. & Thurs. Trails are in very good to excellent condition. Just a word of caution due to the unstable ice conditions and the hundreds of exposed stumps on the Minong Flowage ,For your safety and the safety of the Fire-Rescue Personal who are sent out to retrieve you, Please stay off !
