1 Douglas County Weekly Snowmobile and Winter ATV Trail Report Information provided by Club Members of the Northwest Trails Association and compiled by the Douglas County Forestry Department. UPDATED 03/27/2014 PLEASE NOTE THE SCHEDULED CLOSURE OF THE WINTER REC TRAILS UNDER OUR MANAGEMENT… THE TRAILS ARE BEING CLOSED DUE TO OUR PRIVATE LAND AGREEMENTS EXPIRING ON APRIL 1. BELOW IS A COPY OF THE LEGAL NOTICE THAT WILL RUN INTELEGRAM: LEGAL NOTICE The Douglas County Forestry Department announces that all Winter Recreation trail segments under its management will close for the season effective Monday, March 31, 2014 at 11:59 PM Local Time. Also, all Year Round Recreation trails will temporarily close on 11:59 PM Local Time Monday, March 31, 2014 except for the following trail segments: 1. Gandy Dancer Trail – MN/WI Stateline to Patzau 2. Saunders Grade – MN/WI Stateline to Schallameir Road parking lot 3. Wild Rivers Trail – Douglas Co./Washburn Co. line to a point 500 feet north of County Highway 4. Wild Rivers Trail – North Trailhead parking lot (CTH to the Harroun Road Jon Harris Director of Forestry & Natural Resources Douglas County Forestry Department Mark Liebaert Chair – Douglas County Forest, Parks & Recreation Committee ---PAGE BREAK--- 2 SE Quadrant 03/27/14 Trails 35S, 41S, 5, and 541 have all been groomed this week and are in excellent condition. Additional grooming is anticipated before the weekend. Trail 7/27 was groomed 3/26 – excellent condition If the temp cool down…41n and 35n will be groomed. NE Quadrant Updated Monday March 24 Special Notice Due to the unique contract and land owner situation with the Brule River State Forest. Trail 27/27A will remain open as conditions warrant and will not automatically close on March 31st. The lower 4 miles of Trail 27 is County Trail and will close at midnight of March 31st New snow: Several inches of new snow last week. CONDITIONS: Snow cover has been reduced somewhat but there is still good snow cover. Road routes took a nasty hit last week but aren't quite so bad after the new snow. What little there is on roads will disappear rapidly with a little warmth and sun. We have had comments from almost all groomer drivers that trails are as good as they have been all year. GROOMING: Trail 1, groomed Monday. Trail 2, groomed Monday between Amnicon Falls and Brule. Trail 2, groomed Sunday night between Amnicon Falls and Superior. Trail 4, groomed Sunday evening between Hawthorne and Warming Shack at Trail 41 intersection. Trail 4, groomed Monday between Hawthorne and 6 West (Big Rock Corner). Trail 4, groomed Monday between Brule and 6 West (Big Rock Corner). Trail 24, groomed Monday. Trail 27/27A, groomed Sunday night. Trail is in excellent condition. Almost unbelievable for this time of year. Due to our unique contract with Brule River State Forest , the northern 20 miles of Trail 27 along with 27A will stay open past March 31st, pending weather conditions. Drifting on Trail 35 (Wild Rivers) just south of Mikrot Road is horrendous. Drifts were 6-7 feet deep before the melt. Please use caution around drift areas. ---PAGE BREAK--- 3 Check out our warming shelter a with wood stove, gas grill, porta potty and lights. We left a light on for you. NW Quadrant 03/25/4 Grooming has been temporarily suspended (will evaluate if the area gets additional snowfall). Trails currently in fair-good condition. SW Quadrant 03/25/14 Trails is the southwest quadrant of Douglas County and northern Burnett County remain in very good condition in most places - some have been ridden quite hard, and are not quite so good. We have continued grooming regularly. Trail 3 03/25/14 TR#3 will be groomed Thursday or Friday of this week. Douglas County Ski Trails 03/25/14 The ski trails were groomed and tracked last week and are in good condition at this time. If the area receives additional new snowfall during the week we anticipate one final grooming/tracking run before the weekend.
