1 Douglas County Weekly Snowmobile and Winter ATV Trail Report Information provided by Club Members of the Northwest Trails Association and compiled by the Douglas County Forestry Department. UPDATED 01/25/2013 As is typical for this time of year, certain trail segments can be opened and others are not ready yet due to wetland crossings and/or have restrictions due to private land easements. It is critical that we respect the landowners who allow us to use their property... please review the information below carefully before trail riding and confirm that you are using open trails. Please note that on certain trails only segments of that trail may be open at this time. We anticipate frequent updates as the clubs report in with trails they have checked. Thank you. NE Quadrant Tuesday, January 22, 2013 General Conditions: All trails are open with very low snow cover. Conditions are poor. Trails took a nasty beating from the warm weather and rain resulting in drastic snow loss. We received a couple inches of new snow over the weekend. There are a few sleds and ATVs out in some areas but traffic is light. Grooming: We had groomed a limited amount on Trails 1, 4 & 24 between Brule, Hawthorne and Poplar before the melt down but there is not enough to resume grooming. Our new 2.5 mile reroute off 18th St Road in Hawthorne is complete and ready to go. We can now ride from Brule to the warming shack (intersection of trails 4 and 41) without any major road riding. (We have added an outside light at the warming shack to help find the door at night.) We have also completed the new Highway 53 crossing in Hawthorne with three new culverts. It is safer and more convenient for riding and grooming. We have a new local access trail from Trail 4 to the Lackson Rd which is now open. ---PAGE BREAK--- 2 NW Quadrant All trails open but still rough 1 inch new snow. No grooming planned until a goodly amount of snow. Use extreme caution and very slow some time speeds only 3 miles per hour. NW Quadrant TRAIL ISSUE – A TRAILER INVOLVED IN THE ERICKSON CREEK BRIDGE PROJECT IS CURRENTLY DISABLED ON THE TRAIL APPROXIMATELY 1 MILE EAST OF THE TRAIL 4/41 & CTH A CROSSING. THE TRAIL IS PASSABLE BY RECREATIONAL VEHICLES AND THE TRAILER IS MARKED WITH LARGE SIGNS AND D.O.T. REFLECTIVE TRIANGLES. PLEASE USE CAUTION IN THIS AREA. PLEASE NOTE: WE HAVE SCHEDULED A TEMPORARY TRAIL CLOSURE OF A SEGMENT OF TRAIL 4/41 STARTING 01/28/13 AT 7 AM CST AND LASTING TO 01/30/13. AT 5 PM. THE TRAIL CLOSURE IS NECESSARY DUE TO THE REPLACMENT OF THE BRIDGE AT THE ERICKSON CREEK TRAIL CROSSING. THE CLOSED TRAIL SEGMENT WILL BE FROM THE MILCHESKY ROAD SOUTH TO THE WARMING SHACK. SW Quadrant Southwest Quadrant of Douglas County – with the recent cold temps, there is no open water on our trail system. In addition, there is very little snow! Trails remain in poor riding condition for snowmobiles, fair to good for atv riders. NOTICE OF TRAIL ISSUE: On Trail 935, approximately 0.7 miles east of Swedish Highway, some logging equipment is disabled in the trail. Please ride with caution in that area - it could be a week before it can be fixed/removed. There is additional signing, barricades, and orange traffic cones to let you know of the danger. PLEASE RIDE CAREFULLY IN THAT AREA! Burnett County snowmobile trails remain closed, frozen ground atv trails remain open. SE Quadrant We have resumed mowing.
