This year our Contractor for the Haz- ardous Waste Collections has decid- ed not to include electronics and appliances as part of the events. But Superior and Douglas County have options for electronics and appliance recycling year round. You don’t need to save your “stuff” for one day in June. A State sponsored study concluded that Wisconsin could realize substantial eco- nomic benefits by recycling more of the valu- able plastic film that currently ends up in landfills. For years we have said we cannot recycle plastic bags. The reason– they would clog up the automated sorting machines and end up costing the recycling business lots of money. That has changed. Because of the 2012 study several stakeholders worked together to create WRAP a program to increase film recycling, educate the public and to help eliminate barriers to recycling plastic film. Most plastic film ends up as “lumber”, some becomes pellets to be used to create more plastic film. But all plastic film that is recy- cled is kept out of our landfills and won’t be hanging from our trees! Household hazardous waste may be brought to site in Duluth during their hours of operation. Call for current hours. Computer monitors, CPUs and TVs are accepted at Waste Manage- ment of Superior ([PHONE REDACTED]), AA Roll-off ([PHONE REDACTED]), After Life Electronics ([PHONE REDACTED]), Solon Springs Mercantile (715-378- 2860.) These businesses take computers and other electronics year round. There is usually a fee...but call, some items are free. The Landfill also takes e-waste. CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS? Items from construction or demolition (sheetrock, lumber, windows, siding, cement, bricks, etc.) cannot go to the Superior Landfill. They must go to a construction landfill like AA Roll-off ([PHONE REDACTED]), or Lakehead Kimmes ([PHONE REDACTED]). FLUORESCENT AND HID BULBS? Bring fluorescent tubes, HID bulbs and compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) to Campbell Lumber, Poplar Hardware or to the Wastewater Treatment Plant in Superior. City residents can use All resi- dents can use the Hazardous Waste Collections in June. WASTE OIL AND FILTERS? Waste oil and oil filters can be taken to the Solon Springs Transfer Station or the Superior Landfill. These collections are free. Wal-Mart will also take waste oil and filters. MATTRESSES? Dry clean mattresses can be recycled at the Superior Landfill. Wet ones are landfilled. There is a fee. Solon Springs no longer collects mattresses. The cost to have them hauled was triple the cost of taking them there yourself! APPLIANCES? Appliances can be recycled at AA Roll-off ([PHONE REDACTED]), After Life Electronics ([PHONE REDACTED]), Materials Recovery Center for ([PHONE REDACTED]). All for a fee, call to find out current fees as they change. Better yet, have it hauled away by your store when they deliv- er your new one. PAINT? Latex paint is disposable once it is dry. Open cans of unwanted paint and dry them out. Once they are dry they may be thrown in the gar- bage. Oil based paint should be brought to HHW Collections. has a re-use Center to drop off or pick up paint, oil or latex. PACKING PEANUTS? Take packing peanuts to Arco Coffee Company, 2206 Winter St. (715- 392-4771) or Goin’ Postal , 816 Tower Ave. ([PHONE REDACTED]) to be re- used. BRUSH? Brush 3” in diameter or less is accepted at the Brule, Solon Springs and Gordon/Wascott transfer stations and the Superior Landfill. PLASTIC BAGS and Plastic Film? Most retail stores have plastic bag recycling. Save your plastic bags and take them with you when you shop. City of Superior Recycling Schedule ---PAGE BREAK--- Page 5 Superior/Douglas County June 1, 2015 - May 31, 2016 AA Roll-Off at 1021 Garfield Avenue in Superior is the drop off site for residents of the City of Superior. The hours are: Monday– Friday 7:00 to 5:00 and Satur- day 8:00 to 12:00. This is a service provided for the resi- dents of Superior only. It is not an option for businesses or rural County residents. Businesses should contact a vendor to provide services for their recycling services. DROP-OFF SITE FOR CITY RESIDENTS PHONE NUMBERS YOU MAY NEED In winter, snow and ice can be a problem for your recy- cling hauler. Please keep your recycling cart shov- eled out and ice free. If not kept free of ice and snow, the hauler will be unable to collect your recyclables. Car batteries and button batteries are not accepted at these sites, please bring these batteries to any dealer of these batteries. Alkaline batteries can go in your garbage. Remember: IF IT IS NOT RECHARGEABLE, IT CAN GO IN THE GARBAGE! FREE RECYCLING FOR RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES AND CELL PHONES! How to Prepare Your Recyclables GLASS– Rinse, remove and recycle the lid. Lids can be recy- cled separately. No window glass, dishes or other non food container glass Is accepted. PLASTIC- (now collecting 1-7) Rinse clean. No STYROFOAM. PAPER– All clean paper is acceptable. It can be bundled in brown paper bags if you like. Kleenex, dirty paper plates or dirty pizza boxes are not accepted. Put shredded paper in brown paper bag and label as paper. CARDBOARD- Corrugated cardboard and cereal box type cardboard are accepted. Cut large piece to fit the containers. ALUMINUM– Cans and clean foil are accepted. METAL CANS- Remove the labels if possible, rinse clean. Remember! Year Round Medication Drop-off at City of Superior Police / Sheriff’s Office Leave the meds in bottle with drug name but cover your personal information. No Sharps collected. SHARPS DISPOSAL FOR ALL DOUGLAS COUNTY RESIDENTS Superior, Douglas County and Essentia Health have had a long time partnership to assist residents in safely disposing of their used sharps. Stop in the Essentia Pharmacy in Supe- rior, pick up a free container, fill it with your used sharps and return it to Essen- tia for disposal. It’s that easy! This program is not for businesses, or R ecycling has been part of Superior and Douglas County for over 20 years. How are we doing? In 2014 the City of Superior recy- cled 1478.55 tons and the rural areas of Douglas County recycled 987 tons of recyclables. That equates to 108.93 lbs. per capita in Superior and 115.78 lbs. per capita in rural Douglas County. Both exceed the standard set by the State of Wisconsin. This will help protect the health of your family, neighbors and the environment. As you make your choic- es about the use of hazardous and nonhazardous products, remember that the decisions consumers make affect the way manufacturers design products. The most common household products involved in poisonings are: prescription and non-prescription drugs, cleaning agents, plants and cosmetics. Use products containing hazardous materials and fertilizers sparingly or use a non hazardous/less toxic alternative. Before purchasing a product, read the label carefully to make sure it will do what you want it to do. Once you buy something you are also legally re- sponsible for disposing of it properly. Buy just what you need to do the job. Use it up. Give leftovers to a friend, neighbor, business or charity that can use them up. Excess pesticide might be offered to a greenhouse or garden center. Select water-based products over solvent-based products when available paint, glue, shoe polish). Avoid aerosol sprays. Choose the pump spray or other alternatives. Do not apply fertilizers before a rain. Not only will you lose most of the pesticides or fertilizer through runoff, but you also will be harming the environ- ment. Do not overwater after application. Do not apply more than is recom- mended. Have a professional change your motor oil. For a few dollars more, you not only save yourself time and energy, but it's more likely that the used motor oil collected is recycled.
