In response, Gov. Brian Kemp has declared a State of Emergency for Winter Weather across Georgia, effective late Friday, Jan. 23, through Monday, Jan. 26, 2026. Dawson County Chairman Billy Thurmond has also issued a Declaration of Local Emergency for Dawson County. All residents are strongly advised to avoid travel during the weekend of Jan. 23 due to hazardous road conditions. Local first responders warn residents not to attempt to clear fallen trees, especially those near power lines. These dangerous situations should only be handled by Dawson County first responders, Georgia State responders, and utility companies. Dawson County has limited rock salt supplies and will prioritize treatment of essential service routes. Barricades will be placed on roads impacted by downed trees, power lines, or other hazards. For non-life-threatening issues, residents should contact the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office non- emergency line at [PHONE REDACTED]. The County will not be able to provide information on when roads will reopen or when power will be restored. But the County will update the residents about which roads are closed, depending on internet access availability. Prepare for possible power outages that may last several days. Have adequate food, water, medications, and a safe way to stay warm if power is lost.
