Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 SENIOR CLINIC AIDE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for assisting physicians and mid-level practitioners, and other members of a health care team in operating a clinic. The incumbent collects patient histories, provides general health information, performs basic measurements and laboratory tests, and provides clerical and logistic support to health care professionals. Provides direct supervision for clinic aides. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Clinic Coordinator or licensed professional with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Provides direct supervision to clinic aides, assists with orientation, input for evaluation, and scheduling; Maintains quality control measures for dated supplies/medications, insures medical instruments and equipment are cleaned and sterilized and monitors temperature of refrigerator and incubator; Inventories and orders of supplies and pharmaceuticals; Coordinates and mails laboratory forms and specimens; Maintains lab/storeroom areas; Interviews patients and collects patients' medical, social, family, birth control, GYN/OB, and STD history; Provides HIV counseling; Performs basic health-related measurements and laboratory work including height and weight measurements, blood pressure, hemoglobin tests, urinalysis, pregnancy tests and related tests; Educates patients about family planning methods and sexually transmitted diseases; Updates patients' charts with results of lab tests and record daily lab results in clinic log; Prepares exam rooms, re-supplies room as needed and tears down and cleans exam room surfaces; Sterilizes equipment as needed; Answers telephone and provides callers with general information or sets up an appointment as needed. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of modern public health principles and practices; Good knowledge of federal, state and local laws related to the collection of capillary blood samples; Good knowledge of universal precautions for bloodborne pathogens; Ability to perform a capillary blood collection, take blood pressure and perform urinalysis; Ability to supervise others effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ---PAGE BREAK--- SR. CLINIC AIDE Page 2 Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: a. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree in medical terminology, medical laboratory, nursing or closely related field; or b. Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two years of experience performing basic laboratory tests or assisting doctors, nurses or other medical professionals; or c. Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse and one year of the above experience; or d. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and OHSA Bloodborne Pathogens Classification: Category 1
