Clerk – Schools Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: School Districts Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: l/23/76 Amended: 7/l9/83; 6/l3/9l; 6/7/23 CLERK - SCHOOLS DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Independently performs routine clerical work and/or assists in performing more difficult and responsible work. Although detailed instructions are given for new or difficult assignments, and procedures rather definitely fixed, employees must exercise independent judgment in applying them to specific case. The work is reviewed by immediate observation, by checking completed work, by periodic checks, or by another step in the clerical process. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Maintains attendance data and payroll records, entry and withdrawal cards and other materials; Checks reports and records for clerical accuracy and completeness; Locates proper source data files and enters additions, changes or corrections; Makes arithmetical computations and compiles simple statistical reports; May monitor student sign in and sign out sheet; May issue passes to students; Acts as receptionist by taking messages, answering questions and providing routine information; Operates a variety of office machines such as visual display terminal, mimeo graph, Photostat, simple computing, personal computer; May contact parents, teachers and students to locate school absentees and determine causes of attendance failure. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; Good knowledge of the compulsory education and related laws; Working knowledge of business arithmetic and English; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with all types of people; Clerical aptitude; Mental alertness; Accuracy; Tact and courtesy; Physical conditions commensurate with demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
