SAMPLE TOBACCO-FREE WORKPLACE POLICY The purpose of this policy is to protect the health of (employer name) employees and visitors by eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke on all (employer name) properties and promoting positive community role modeling that tobacco use is not an acceptable behavior for young people or adults within the entire community. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified secondhand smoke as a Group A carcinogen, that is, a substance known to cause cancer in humans. The EPA recognizes no safe level of exposure for Group A carcinogens. Due to the acknowledged hazards arising from exposure to secondhand smoke, it shall be our policy to provide a tobacco-free environment for all employees and visitors. This policy covers any tobacco product and applies to both employees and non-employee visitors. 1. Tobacco use of any kind is hereby prohibited on all (employer name) owned locations/premises; all internal and external areas, parking lots (including inside private vehicles on (employer name) property, all entrances and exits; and all (employer name) owned/and or leased vehicles. No ashtrays are permitted in any indoor or outdoor area on the premises. 2. Supervisors and the (employer name) Board of Directors will support this policy and are required to provide this policy to any employee upon request.  Employees will be informed of this policy through signage posted throughout the property, at staff meetings, and paychecks. Additionally, the policy will be disseminated to newly-hired employees at orientation and training.  Members and visitors will be informed of this policy through signage, newsletters, and website. 3. Supervisory staff will be responsible for ongoing compliance with this policy. Supervisors have the responsibility to inform any employee who is using tobacco in any area where tobacco is prohibited that the individual is in violation of the tobacco use restrictions. Employees who use tobacco in non-tobacco areas are in violation of New York State law and/or (employer name) policies and are subject to appropriate disciplinary procedures. All staff have the responsibility to inform any visitor who is using tobacco in any area where tobacco use is prohibited of the tobacco-free campus policy and request that the individual not use tobacco on (employer name) property. 4. Tobacco cessation is a personal choice. The (employer name) encourages employees in quitting tobacco use and will provide cessation resources. POLICY STATEMENT The (municipality/organization) is committed to providing a high quality of living for all residents. Therefore, we believe that: 1. Tobacco product use in proximity of children, youth and adults engaging in or watching recreational activities is unhealthy and detrimental to the health of others. 2. Tobacco products once consumed in public spaces are often discarded on the ground, thus posing a risk of ingestion to toddlers and causing a litter problem. 3. As parents, leaders, coaches, and officials, we are thought of as role models, and the use of tobacco products around youth has a negative effect on their lifestyle choices. TOBACCO-FREE FACILITIES The (municipality/organization) does not allow the use of tobacco products on ##-owned park land and park facilities. COMPLIANCE PROCEDURES The emphasis on enforcing this tobacco-free policy is through voluntary compliance: 1. Appropriate ##-owned park land and park facilities properties will be signed. 2. (municipality/organization) officials will make periodic observations of these outdoor areas to monitor compliance and help to promote awareness of the tobacco-free policy. A repeat violation may cause the individual to be removed from the affected area. Policy Adoption Date:
