Recreational Maintenance Supervisor Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: City of Cortland Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 10/15/80 Amended: 7/15/99; 3/22/23 RECREATION MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for planning and supervising the maintenance of park areas, recreation facilities including athletic fields, playgrounds and equipment, picnic and recreation areas, and swimming pools. An incumbent of this position is responsible for the safe, efficient and economical operation of the physical facilities and equipment used for recreation purposes. The work is performed under the general direction of the Youth Bureau Director. Supervision is exercised over subordinate staff engaged in maintenance activities. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Confers with Youth Bureau Director in such areas as work to be performed, equipment required and budget preparation; Supervises the construction and maintenance of parks, athletic fields, and other recreation areas; Supervises grounds maintenance activities; Supervises the repair and erection of playground equipment; Inspects buildings, grounds and equipment to insure that they are in safe condition to be used by participants; Instructs subordinates in the Youth Bureau in safe and efficient methods of performing buildings and grounds maintenance tasks; Maintains records and develops reports concerning aquatic operations; Performs daily upkeep and maintenance of aquatic facilities; Monitors chemical levels of pool and keeps accurate records; Supervises the flooding and maintenance of ice rinks; Reviews work performed by subordinates by on-site inspections; Prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports such as equipment inventory, purchase orders, vehicle maintenance records, ledger of expenditures, activity reports and personnel records; Purchases, within prescribed limit, equipment and supplies; May operate and perform minor maintenance on motor equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABIILTIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, materials, terminology, and principals involved in the maintenance of parks and recreational areas, facilities, and equipment; Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment necessary for the maintenance and repair of park and recreational facilities; Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions; Ability to lay out and supervise the work of subordinates; Ability to keep simple records; Initiative; Manual dexterity; ---PAGE BREAK--- Recreational Maintenance Supervisor Page 2 I 2 Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience in maintaining recreation facilities, grounds and equipment which include athletic fields, playgrounds, picnic areas and buildings. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a New York State Class D driver’s license is required. Failure to maintain a NYS Class D license will result in disciplinary action or dismissal. Must complete the Aquatic Facility Operators course within one year of employment. Must maintain certification throughout employment. Must obtain CPR, AED and First Aid certification within one year of employment and maintain certification throughout employment.
