Survival Skills: Exit Location Exit Location – 2002 Edition, NFPA 1001 5.3.1, 5.3.5 NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF STATE Skill Sheet 23-3 Candidate's Name Date Evaluator's Name Evaluator's Signature The candidate, given a complete set of PPE and SCBA with obscured facepiece, when placed in the middle of a room, shall perform a quick perimeter search for doors and/or windows and determine which may be used for emergency exit in 60 seconds in accordance with Delmar, Firefighter’s Handbook, 2 ed., NYS ed. Time limit for this station is 5 minutes; however the candidate must spend no more than 60 seconds locating and identifying an exit location. 02/2007 Criteria: Pass Fail Candidate searches room to find exterior wall Begins rapid perimeter search to locate possible escape routes Evaluator states "You have one minute to locate and emergency exit." (Evaluator Starts Timing) Uses high hand sweeps of walls to help locate exit Locates emergency exit (must be verbalized) If this exit is not suitable for emergency exit, candidate continues search Candidate stays low at all times and oriented once locating wall Once exterior wall is located, finds emergency exit in 60 seconds or less Evaluator Notes
