Clinical Fellow in Speech Language Pathology Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 12/6/01 Amended: 12/12/02; 4/3/09; 10/17/22 CLINICAL FELLOW IN SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional position providing evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of language, voice and speech disorders and the evaluation of the communication functions and disabilities of clients. A Clinical Fellow functions under the direct supervision of a certified Speech/Language Pathologist and under the general supervision of the Director of the Children with Special Needs Division. Employees in this class are appointed for a period not to exceed one year. Upon successful completion of the mandatory requirements for license and certification, a Clinical Fellow will be rated according to their training and experience, and appointed to the position of Speech/Language Pathologist. Does related work as required. TYPICAL ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) UNDER DIRECT SUPERVISION OF A SPEECH/LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST: Provides speech language pathology treatment services in accordance with accepted professional standards and practices including muscular coordination exercises, sensory stimulation and association training and language development activities; Evaluates the degree of function and disability of patients unless contraindicated by professional judgment or by the attending physician; Plans and develops remedial programs designed to restore or improve communication efficiency; Maintains program records including, but not limited to, service budget, statistical reports, listing the number of clients treated and/or discharged, evaluations, reevaluations, types of conditions seen and number of clients on a waiting list for evaluations or treatment programs; Consults with Medical Director on subjects of a professional medical nature; Integrates treatment plans into total care plans in consultation with clients, physicians, and other personnel providing patient care; Participates in client care review conferences; Initiates and attends conferences with the administrator, physicians, and other departmental staff to interpret the functions of the speech language pathology service and its relationship with other client care services; Develops or assists in the development of speech language pathology policies and procedures; Records on clients’ chart all evaluations, reevaluations, progress notes, consultations and discharge summaries; Assists in the development of and participates in the department's in-service education program. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS: ---PAGE BREAK--- Clinical Fellow in Speech Language Pathology Page 2 I 2 Good knowledge of the principles and practices of speech language pathology; Good knowledge of pathological conditions and socio-economic factors affecting speech disabilities; Good knowledge of community resources available to support or supplement speech language pathology programs; Ability to prepare accurate reports; ability to secure the cooperation of patients; Good professional judgment; Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with others. ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Master’s degree in speech/language pathology from a graduate program accredited by ASHA. Must have completed all requirements necessary to begin CFY and student experience working with children birth – five years of age. Must also have permanent or provisional certificate for teaching speech and hearing handicapped or certificate of qualification. NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
