Weigh Scale Operator Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Non-competitive Adopted: 6/14/03 Amended: 11/1/24 WEIGH SCALE OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position is responsible for operating the weigh scales at Cortland County Landfill and the Recycling Center and performing other financial and administrative duties associated with the Solid Waste Division. Activities are performed under the general supervision of the Director of Solid Waste Management, and direct supervision is provided by the Landfill Operator Supervisor. Performs related duties as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Ensures all vehicles entering the facility for purposes of disposing trash possess and display a permit as required by the County; Input data into personal computer, including permit numbers, type of load (trash C&D, recyclables), origin of load, payment type, and put going destination (when applicable); Issues copy of bill to customers; Operates weigh scales, including reading weight of vehicles; Collects payments, operates cash register and makes change; Informs all customers with uncovered loads, that in the future all loads must be covered or the customer will be subject to non-acceptance of the load; Conveys information on what types of trash are acceptable at Sold Waste management Facilities to all customers in a courteous, professional manner; Maintains a safe and orderly working environment; including snow and ice control for scales and walkways; Ensures scales, computer, and equipment in the scale house are in good working order; Ensures computer software is operating properly; Cleans and maintains scale house and area around scales. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of waste and recycling types, and knowledge of what types of trash are acceptable at Cortland County Waste Management Facilities; Ability to be courteous and tactful; Ability to get along well with others; Skill in directing people in a non-confrontational manner and deals with the public in a diplomatic manner; Ability to exercise self-control with irate persons; Thoroughness and dependability; Ability to do regular repetitive tasks; Ability to operate a personal computer, utilizing specialized WEIGHMASTER computer software; Ability to handle cash inflows and outflows; Ability to make arithmetic computations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages accurately; Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files; ---PAGE BREAK--- Weigh Scale Operator Page 2 I 2 Ability to use and maintain good judgment; Ability to be dependable in meeting conditions of work schedule; Physical condition commensurate with demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma AND one year of full-time (or the equivalent volunteer or part-time) clerical experience. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid Weighmaster's License, or obtain one within one month of hire date, and renew license as required by NYS Law. Failure to maintain Weighmaster's License may lead to disciplinary action or dismissal. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a NYS Driver's License.
