County Police Sergeant (Deputy Sheriff) Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 Amended: 12/11/12; 10/18/22 COUNTY POLICE SERGEANT - (DEPUTY SHERIFF) DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for assigning, inspecting and scheduling the work of County Police Officers - (Deputy Sheriff) on an assigned shift or within a unit for the Sheriff's Department. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-ranking officer. An incumbent supervises and assists lower level officers in coping with difficult law enforcement situations and organizes and coordinates the department's activities in responding to emergency situations. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Supervises the activities of County Police Officers - (Deputy Sheriff); Assigns subordinates to specific areas of patrol or investigation; Receives complaints from public concerning crimes and emergencies; Patrols areas to enforce laws, investigate crimes and arrest violators; Investigates illegal or suspicious activities of persons and quells disturbances; Serves court orders and processes; Coordinates the transfer of prisoners between various locations; Prepares and reviews a variety of records and reports associated with law enforcement work; May be assigned to perform in specialized areas of investigation such as Juvenile, Narcotics, Vice, etc.; May be designated as representative of the department in addressing civic groups or in dealings with other agencies; May be assigned responsibility for supervision and maintenance of departmental equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of modern law enforcement; Good knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedures Law and other applicable laws, regulations and ordinances; Good knowledge of the local geography and roads; Good knowledge of the operation of law enforcement equipment; Skill in the use of firearms; Skill in the operation of a patrol car; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to operate law enforcement equipment; Ability to apply first aid; Ability to deal effectively with the public; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Good powers of observation; Sound judgment; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. ---PAGE BREAK--- County Police Sergeant (Deputy Sheriff) Page 2 I 2 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Three years of permanent competitive experience as a County Police Officer - (Deputy Sheriff). SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the vehicles operated. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
