Law 64) Duration: A temporary appointment may be made for a period of three months when the need of such is important and urgent. Exceptions can be made beyond three months only in the following circumstances. When an employee is on leave of absence, a temporary may be made for the period of authorized duration of leave; When the position to which appointment is proposed will not exceed six months. If position exceeds the 6 months limitation, the Personnel Officer must be advised and may extend, if justified. When an appointment is made to a position ---PAGE BREAK--- appointed to render professional technical or other expert services on an occasional or fulltime basis for a project period not to exceed 18 months. Use of Eligible Lists: 1 day to 3 months: may be made without regard to the eligible list. 3 months to 6 months: must use eligible list without regard to rank on list. In excess of 6 months: must be made from eligible list as for permanent appointment. NOTE: When making a temporary appointment beyond three months, review your options under the Contingent Permanent rule to avoid losing your investment in time and training.
