Driver Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Non-competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 Amended: 10/16/09; 12/11/12; 9/10/14; 11/02/22; 2/3/26 DRIVER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for transporting clients to and from appointments and activities such as medical, school, work, shopping, recreation and other activities. In addition, the incumbent delivers meals or materials and maintains a daily log of transportation activities. The work is performed under the general supervision with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgement in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Operates a van or other vehicle for the transport of clients, food or materials; Maintains a daily log of passengers and materials being transported and their destinations; Reports any mechanical defects, major or minor accidents to immediate supervisor; Makes special trips to gather information or assist clients as assigned; May collect fees/donations; May answer telephone, copy documents, or file; May participate in the preparation and serving of food; Conducts client safety checks and wellness calls as part of meal delivery and follow-up. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of safe driving practices, traffic laws and regulations; Good knowledge of local geography and roads; Good knowledge of local community service agencies; Ability to drive safely and to read road maps; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to safely lift, carry, load, and transport meal cambros and insulated coolers as part of daily meal delivery operations. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
