Conservation Aide – S&W Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Soil and Water Conservation District Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 9/20/00 Amended: 6/9/16; 3/2/21; 11/1/24 CONSERVATION AIDE DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position exists in the Cortland County Soil and Water Conservation District and performs a variety of technical duties related to the establishment of conservation practices concerning land and water on public and private properties. Employees in this class are expected to assist other staff with projects, programs, and outreach related to natural resource conservation. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the District Manager. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Field work for conservation practices and programs including, but not limited to soil and water sample collection, crop or pest scouting, inspections, and surveys, and seeding, planting, weeding and mulching; Supporting conservation practice planning and implementation by completing risk assessments and inventories, compiling resource data and maps, developing plans, and preparing outreach materials, etc.; Information/education activities related to natural resource conservation and other public outreach programs including, but not limited to public presentations, newspaper articles, and report writing. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of natural resource conservation; Knowledge of agricultural operations and practices; Ability to compile data and prepare written documents; Good verbal and interpersonal communication skills; Ability to get along good with others; Manual dexterity; Mechanical aptitude; Accuracy; Reliability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or possession of a NYS equivalency diploma. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid NYS Driver’s License.
