Superintendent of Public Works (Villages) Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Villages Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 6/3/03 Amended: 3/13/08 SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC WORKS (VILLAGES) DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The Superintendent of Public Works is responsible for construction, maintenance and extension of streets and roads, storm sewer maintenance, and parks. Supervision is exercised over the work of all employee(s) of the department. Work is performed under the general direction of the Mayor and Village Board. On call evenings and weekends. The Superintendent of Public Works actively participates in work projects and does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Plans and supervises the construction, extension, repair and maintenance of streets and roads; Supervises the maintenance and extension of storm sewers; Directs the removal of snow and ice from streets and roads; Supervises the care and maintenance of parks and playgrounds; Makes recommendations to the village board regarding major projects and need for material, equipment and manpower; Insures the proper care and safe use of street department tools, trucks and equipment; Orders supplies, maintains inventory and prepares budget estimates for limited projects; Responds to customer complaints; Consults with Mayor regarding unusual or emergency situations; Operates backhoe, dump truck, air compressor, lawn mower and other related equipment; Performs minor maintenance to municipal buildings, grounds, and equipment used in connection with the work; Plans and assigns work, and other office work such as requisitions of materials and supplies, keeping inventories of materials and supplies, records of jobs, and job timesheets; Keeps records of the enforcement of Right to Know, and OSHA requirements; May participate in the repair of water main breaks and hydrant leaks; May read electric meters. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and equipment used in the construction and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, and related public works activities; Good knowledge of the principles and procedures involved in the operation of a street department; Ability to coordinate and supervise the work of subordinates; Ability to work under adverse weather conditions; Resourcefulness; Initiative; Good judgment; Ability to maintain accurate records; Ability to deal effectively with the public; Mechanical aptitude; ---PAGE BREAK--- Superintendent of Public Works (Villages) Page 2 I 2 Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high a standard senior high school and five years of progressively responsible experience in public works activities SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of New York State Class B Commercial Driver’s License and appropriate endorsements.
