Sign Technician Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 Amended: 01/01/08; 11/4/09; 5/1/18; 9/13/21; 8/8/24 SIGN TECHNICIAN DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the construction, repair, inventory, location, and installation of highway signs in the County. The work requires knowledge of specific laws and regulations relevant to traffic control systems. Additionally, the incumbent is required to participate in snow removal activities during the winter months. The work is performed under general supervision with leeway allowed in the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Evaluates and determines necessary traffic devices required for County highways; Constructs metal vehicular signs; Uses computer driven sign face cutter, stencils, and various other methods of sign construction; Participates in the installation of signs according to regulations; Cleans, paints, repairs, and replaces barricades and other traffic control devices; Maintains inventory of all related material; Consults and advises town and village highway personnel regarding traffic control regulations; Lays out road striping indexing for contract painting; Gathers traffic count information and tabulates results; Seasonally operates snow removal equipment or acts as wingman as required; May occasionally, as assigned, operate various heavy automotive equipment. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the NYS Vehicular and Traffic Law as it pertains to regulating the installation and use of traffic signs; Good knowledge of the NYS Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices; Good knowledge of the construction, maintenance, and repair of traffic control devices; Good knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology, and accident precautions of the painting trade; Good knowledge of local geography and roads; Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files; Ability to understand and interpret complex oral instructions and/or written directions; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six months of work experience or its part-time equivalent in construction or road work. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid New York State Class B Driver's License with air brake is required.
