Jurisdiction: Cortland County Villages Jurisdictional Class: Non-competitive Adopted: 3/14/07 Revised: 8/1/08 VILLAGE HISTORIAN DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a responsible part-time position involving the collection and preservation of historical events relative to the history of the Village. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Village Board and general guidelines of the State Historian with considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Collects and preserves records related to the history of the Village; Supervises and maintains files on various historical records; Cooperates with County Historian to plan a unified pattern of collecting, reporting and preserving historical information; Prepares written reports to the Town Board and the State Historian on an annual basis; Prepares correspondence relative to inquiries and research of historical matters; Directs and participates in the preparation of materials and literature for special events; May lecture on occasion to groups or organizations concerning historic data. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the history of the Village; working knowledge of the techniques of historical research; ability to write legibly; ability to lecture and write on historical events; clerical aptitude; initiative; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or the possession of a high school equivalency diploma supplemented by training and/or experience in the maintenance of historical records.
