Ventilation - Horizontal Ventilation NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF STATE Practical Examination q Pass q Fail Candidate's Name Date Evaluator's Name Evaluator's Signature The firefighter, given a selection of hand tools, a ladder and a scenario shall demonstrate the proper procedure for clearing an upper-story window opening, while wearing full protective gear, as outlined in NYS Truck Company Operations Time limit for this station is 10 minutes. Timing starts when the candidate touches the ladder or a ventilation tool after telling the evaluator he is ready to start. TASK POSSIBLE POINTS POINTS AWARDED COMMENTS Ladder is placed at correct climbing angle 1 Ladder is positioned along windward side of window with tip approximately even with top of window 1 Ladder placement and/or positioning is corrected as necessary prior to climbing 1 Selects an appropriate tool for assigned task 1 Ascends ladder safely while carrying tool (maintains hand contact with ladder at all times while climbing) 1 Stops at appropriate height and secures self to ladder using either leg lock or safety belt 1 Demonstrates procedure for breaking window 1 Strikes the tool at top of the pane 1 Hands are kept above point of impact 1 All protective clothing is worn properly for task 1 All glass and obstructions are removed from opening 1 Safely descends ladder while carrying tool (maintains hand contact with ladder at all times) 1 Total possible points 12 Candidate must achieve a total of 8 points to pass this station and be awarded all points in the shaded, bold areas. Unacceptable performance or failure to complete any task in the shaded bold areas constitute a failure of the station. No partial points shall be awarded.
