School Crossing Guard – City Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: City of Cortland, Village McGraw, Village of Marathon Jurisdictional Class: Non-competitive Adopted: March 14, 2007 Revised: October 1, 2008 SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is responsible part-time work calling for the exercise of considerable vigilance in directing traffic and assisting children going to and from school in safely crossing streets. Work is performed according to an established routine with some leeway for the use of independent judgment in emergency situations. Supervision is received from a Police Officer through inspection and reports. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Stops traffic and guides children safely across streets; Instructs children concerning proper places for crossing streets and precautions that are to be observed; Assists children with minor problems encountered going to and from school; May direct traffic at assigned post during school crossing hours. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good general intelligence; Ability to deal firmly yet courteously with the public; Ability to get along well with children; Familiarity with first-aid methods; Good powers of observation; Willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; Dependability; Good physical condition. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of a standard grade school course; or any equivalent combination of training and experience of which indicates sufficient maturity to do the work.
