County Police Lieutenant (Deputy Sheriff) Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 11/03/04 Amended: 12/11/12; 10/18/22 COUNTY POLICE LIEUTENANT- (DEPUTY SHERIFF) DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for directing the activities of the Sheriff’s Department on an assigned shift or performing and directing investigative work. The work is performed under the general direction of a higher ranking officer with wide leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over subordinate Deputy Sheriffs. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Supervises, directs and coordinates the scheduling and utilization of department personnel; Conducts criminal and juvenile investigations; Plans, assigns, directs and reviews the work of subordinate supervisory and clerical personnel; Reviews and records complaints concerning staff activities and takes appropriate action where possible or refers complaints to supervisory officers; Enforces rules and regulations governing personnel and staff; Assists in developing or revising departmental policies; Prepares reports of activities; May serve as liaison between the Sheriff, courts and other county agencies. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of modern law enforcement; Thorough knowledge of the New York State Penal Law, Vehicle and Traffic Law, Criminal Procedures Law and other applicable laws, regulations and ordinances; Good knowledge of the principles and practices of criminal investigations; Good knowledge of the local geography and roads; Good knowledge of the operation of law enforcement equipment; Skill in the use of firearms; Skill in the operation of a patrol car; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to operate law enforcement equipment; Ability to apply first aid; Ability to deal effectively with the public; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Good powers of observation; Sound judgment; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of permanent competitive experience as a Sergeant- (Deputy Sheriff). ---PAGE BREAK--- County Police Lieutenant (Deputy Sheriff) Page 2 I 2 SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the vehicles operated. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
