Recreation Director – Towns & Villages Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Towns & Villages Class: Competitive Allocation: approval: 12-20-83 Adopted: 11/9/82 Amended: 10/23/12; 7/18/23 RECREATION DIRECTOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This full-time administration position involves the responsibility for planning, organizing, and implementing a variety of recreation programs within a Village or Township. The incumbent is responsible for one or more specific program, areas; e.g., athletics, playgrounds, recreation centers, swim program, special events, etc. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Board appointed Recreation Committee with wide leeway allowed for independent decision making. Direct supervision is exercised over subordinate personnel, which increases substantially during the summer season. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only): Plans, organizes, directs and oversees recreation programs for various age groups; Selects, trains, and supervises volunteers and paid recreation personnel; Prepares news releases and schedules relating to recreation programs; Prepares a variety of records and reports as required by Recreation Committee for program administration; Inspects facilities and equipment to insure the safety of participants and to assess future needs; Gives immediate direction and instruction to participants and/or employees engaged in recreation program. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the theory, principles and practices of recreation administration; Good knowledge of planning and equipping recreation facilities and areas; Working knowledge of modern public relations techniques; Ability to plan, organize and promote recreation program activities; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to communicate effectively to gain the cooperation of people of all ages; Ability to prepare written and oral material; Initiative; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four year college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or closely related field; OR Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered two year college with an Associate’s Degree in Recreation, Physical Education, or a closely related field and two years of full-time paid experience or its part-time equivalent in an organized recreation or athletic program; OR ---PAGE BREAK--- Recreation Director – Towns & Villages Page 2 I 2 Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four years of the above experience; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and above. NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
