200-007 Title- FIRE POLICE ACTIVATION Effective Date March 26th, 2008 References – Next Scheduled Review Modified Date CLASSIFICATION – POLICY STATEMENT Approved By - PREFACE: This policy was adopted March 26, 2008 by the Cortland County Fire Chiefs Association. This is in accordance with General Municipal Law 209-c and State Comptroller Opinion 79-853, which simply states that a Police agency cannot activate for Fire Police independently without the Fire Chief’s approval and that Fire Police also cannot act independently without the Fire Chiefs approval. PURPOSE: To insure that our Fire Police personnel are utilized in a manner that is appropriate and related to their duties. POLICY: 1. Whenever fire police personnel are requested to a scene other than an existing fire or rescue situation, the dispatcher shall: a. Activate the requested fire department’s Chiefs tones and have an officer call Fire Control b. The dispatcher shall advise the officer of the nature and details of the incident as well as the requesting agency c. If the Chief accepts the assignment, dispatch will activate said department’s fire police squad and provide the assignment based on the officer’s directive which may result in responding to the scene, a specific staged location or their fire station for assignment Department of Emergency Response And Communications Cortland County 911 Public Safety Building; Suite 201 54 Greenbush Street Cortland, New York 13045 ---PAGE BREAK--- 2. If the officer decides the situation does not warrant the services of his / her department’s fire police personnel or he / she will not authorize their use, the dispatcher shall: a.
