Motor Equipment Operator – Towns & Villages Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Towns & Villages (Cortland County) Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: 6/11/92 Amended: 4/23/92; 8/6/09 MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is recurring manual work involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of various types of motor equipment and associated mechanical attachments. The work is performed under supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Employees are responsible for the routine maintenance of their vehicles and when not driving, do light-to-heavy physical labor. General instructions are received regarding routine work and detailed instructions are received regarding new or unusual assignments. The work is reviewed by immediate observation, by checking completed work and by periodic or spot checks or by another step in the completion of the work. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Operates a dump truck, flatbed truck or similar type in connection with the removal of snow and transportation of various materials, tools, equipment and supplies; Operates a tractor or truck with mechanical attachments, such as snowplow, snow loader, spreader, et cetera; Operates a roller, a bucket loader, trash compactor or other general road construction equipment; Operates equipment as workload demands; Performs preventive maintenance and general cleaning on assigned automotive equipment; Performs manual labor, such as loading trucks, digging ditches, flushing sewers, cleaning culverts, shoveling snow, and road maintenance work; May supervise a small group of laborers as specific tasks require. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of dump trucks, snow removal equipment, routine road construction equipment, and various other types of motor equipment and related attachments; Good knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the use of motor equipment and related attachments; Good knowledge of traffic and other regulations governing the use of motor equipment and of the hazards and safety precautions involved in its operation; Good knowledge of the geography of the area; Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance, make emergency repairs and assist in general repair of the equipment; Ability to understand and to follow simple oral and written directions; Willingness to respond to emergencies; Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: ---PAGE BREAK--- Motor Equipment Operator – Towns & Villages Page 2 I 2 One year fulltime paid or its part-time paid equivalent experience in the operation of construction and/or automotive equipment; OR One year of experience in a labor class position in a highway or public works department of a civil division; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and above. NOTE: Possession of a valid New York State Class B Commercial Driver's License is required.
