Transportation Assistant Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Schools Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 6/30/95 Amended: 6/14/22; 1/11/24; 6/12/24 TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position assists the Department head or higher level administrator in the safe and efficient operation of the transportation program in the school district. The work involves the dispatching of drivers and school buses for the district, and ensuring that all school district buses are staffed with drivers following established routes and prepared time schedules. The position does not involve supervision or direction of the repair and maintenance of school buses. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Department head or higher level administrator with leeway for the use of independent judgment. Does related work as desired. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Assists the Department head or higher level administrator in the development of bus routes and recommends changes, as necessary; Dispatches drivers and buses on assigned daily routes; Assists the Department head or higher level administrator in overseeing compliance with policies of the school district as related to safety, courtesy, reporting, and self responsibility; May assist in conducting periodic training and safety classes to reaffirm safe driving practices and resolve potential problems; Assists in training of new drivers; Prepares periodic reports which include routing data information, mileage usage, bus utilization and employee payrolls; Assists the Department head or higher level administrator in assigning substitute bus drivers as required; Processes complaints regarding bus routing and scheduling, designation of bus stops, transportation personnel, and student bus discipline; Assists in the preparation of the annual transportation budget; Operates two-way radio equipment to inform bus drivers of emergency conditions and route variations; Operates a bus as directed by the Department head or higher level administrator. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of standard transportation methods and the operation of buses; Good knowledge of the geography of the district; Good knowledge of safety procedures, traffic laws and regulations; Good knowledge of the New York State Motor Vehicle Law and applicable regulations of the Public Service Commission as they relate to school bus operation; Ability to organize and conduct driver training and safety courses for school bus drivers; Ability to maintain records and prepare written reports; ability to get along with others; Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma. ---PAGE BREAK--- Transportation Assistant Page 2 I 2 Experience in the operation of a passenger bus or dispatching of vehicles and/or equipment is preferred but not required. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Eligibility for the appropriate level NYS driver’s license and applicable endorsement/certifications at the time of application. Possession of license and applicable endorsements/certifications at time of appointment or within a prescribed time period.
