Motor Equipment Operator (Heavy) Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: City of Cortland Jurisdictional Class: Non-competitive Adopted: 10/15/80 Amended: 7/15/99; 3/11/03; 6/25/10; 3/15/15 MOTOR EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (HEAVY) DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment. This class differs from that of Motor Equipment Operator (Light) by the more frequent operation of heavier and/or more complex equipment. An employee in this class will also be required to perform unskilled labor on occasion. The work is performed under direct supervision. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Operates a grader for snow removal and street construction or repair; Operates a backhoe to dig for pipeline, catch basins, sidewalk, and curb installation, maintenance and repair; Operates a loader to load and move materials such as salt, gravel, and brush; Operates a street sweeper to clean streets and parking lots; Operates tub grinder to reduce brush, trees, and branches to produce wood chips; Operates a roller to roll materials such as stone and asphalt; Operates a sewer truck and related attachments to maintain or repair the sewer system; Operates a snow plow for snow removal; Operates a dump truck to haul materials and equipment for street construction and repair; Operates lighter equipment such as salt truck, pick-up truck, tractor, and lawn mower on an occasional basis as workload or staff availability dictates; Performs minor repairs and preventive maintenance duties such as changing oil, replacing bulbs, checking fluid levels and greasing vehicles; Shovels and rakes asphalt to fill potholes; Lays forms for the construction or repair of sidewalks and curbs; Performs masonry duties for the construction of or repair of catch basins, sidewalks, and curbs; Cuts and cleans brush from streets, waterways and other public areas; May assist the City Water Department in maintaining, repairing and installation of the distribution system; May install and repair traffic signs; May apply markings for road striping, directional arrows and stop bars; May apply and maintain markings for public parking areas; May maintain traffic signals in the City; May maintain event banners and decorative for the City; May be responsible for emergency tree removal during storms; May be involved in the City tree removal program; May supervise Laborers and Motor Equipment Operators (Light) on an occasional basis. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISITICS: Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of motor equipment; Skill in the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment; ---PAGE BREAK--- Motor Equipment Operator (Heavy) Page 2 I 2 Ability to perform physical labor; Ability to follow oral and written directions; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two years of experience in the operation of motor equipment used in construction or public work activities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement required. Failure to maintain a NYS Class B CDL with the endorsement will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
