Jurisdiction: Schools Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 1/1/77 Revised: 7/12/80, 8/1/94 CUSTODIAN / BUS DRIVER GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs routine building cleaning and semiskilled maintenance tasks and operates a school bus; does related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is routine work involving responsibility for both the efficient and economical performance of cleaning and maintenance operations for school buildings, grounds and for the safe transportation of school children on an assigned bus route. Work is performed under the general supervision of a head custodian, school principal or other superior in accordance with established policies with some leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision may be exercised over the work of cleaners. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Sweeps and mops floors and stairs; Dusts desks, woodwork, furniture and other equipment; Washes windows, walls, blackboards, sinks and other fixtures; Polishes furniture and metal furnishings; Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of rubbish; Clears snow and ice from walks and driveways; May be required to perform minor groundskeeping tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming lawns and gathering leaves; Operates an oil or coal low pressure heating system including firing and removing ashes; Checks operation of clocks and bells; Puts out and takes in traffic safety signs; Arranges chairs and tables and other equipment for special use of school building; Repairs window shades, replaces light bulbs, soap and towels; Paints rooms and equipment and assists with minor plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs; Operates a school bus on a regular schedule or on special occasions; May change oil, refill gasoline tanks and perform a variety of similar tasks. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies and equipment and ability to use them efficiently and economically; good knowledge of the operation of a bus and of traffic safety practices and regulations; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of steam boiler equipment; ability to make minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry and mechanical repairs and to perform a variety of routine maintenance tasks; ability to follow oral and written directions; willingness to do custodial and other manual tasks; thoroughness; dependability; good physical condition. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of grade school and one year of fulltime paid experience or its parttime equivalent in building cleaning or maintenance activities. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Candidates must be eligible for a Class CDL C Operator's License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
