Village Treasurer – Villages Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Villages Jurisdictional Class: Exempt Adopted: 1/1/1977 Revised: 3/14/07 VILLAGE TREASURER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important position involving responsibility for receiving, deposition, and maintaining accurate accounts and records of all monies belonging to the village. Work is performed in accordance with applicable provisions of law and under the general direction of the village board. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Has custody of all monies belonging to the village, and keeps accounts of all receipts and expenditures in conformance with a uniform system of accounts; Issues receipts for monies received and deposits monies with designated bank; Prepares tax bills and collects current taxes; Makes searches on back taxes when requested and makes out back tax bills; Prepares periodic reports of financial affairs for the mayor, village board, and state departments. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods and procedures used in keeping and checking financial accounts and records; Good knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; Good knowledge of business arithmetic and English; Ability to instruct the work of others; Ability to follow oral and written directions; Ability to deal efficiently with the public; Clerical aptitudes; Accuracy; Dependability; Good judgment; Good physical condition. SUGGESTED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or GED and at least three years’ experience in keeping and checking financial accounts and records, or additional training in accounting procedure.
