Dispatch Coordinator Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 08/24/2006 Amended: 7/23/08; 12/20/13; 11/01/22 DISPATCH COORDINATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the activities of the County 911 Communication Center. The work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Emergency Response and Communications with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over the work of subordinate staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Supervises, directs, and coordinates the scheduling and utilization of communications personnel; Plans, assigns, directs and reviews work of subordinate dispatchers; Oversees the maintenance, security and training of the 911 equipment and computer systems; Reviews and records complaints concerning staff activities and takes appropriate action; Refers and reviews complaints with supervisory officers; Enforces rules and regulations governing personnel and staff; Assists in developing or revising emergency communication policies; Maintains records and prepares reports of activities; Performs the duties and tasks of Dispatcher or Senior Dispatcher; Must identify and intervene in high risk behavior of subordinates. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of all emergency service providers within the county and the surrounding area; Thorough knowledge of the communications center policies, procedures, terminology, and equipment; Good knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations that pertain to the operation and functions within the communications center; Good knowledge of administrative and security procedures; Ability to organize and maintain records and files; Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to plan and supervise the work of others; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs; Ability to formulate a local government needs assessment for program areas; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four years of experience dispatching police, fire, or other emergency personnel or vehicles through the use of radio/telephone equipment data entry or typing. ---PAGE BREAK--- Dispatch Coordinator Page 2 I 2 NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience may be prorated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
