Senior Engineering Technician Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing a wide range of technical work including the application of standard engineering principles and practices to a variety of public works engineering projects and assignments. The work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level engineer with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment according to established procedures and policies. May supervise subordinate staff. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Performs general survey work including route layouts, location of rights-of-way and property boundaries, and establishing proper grades and alignments; Serves as chief of party in engineering surveys; Drafts and prepares maps, charts, and drawings using computer aided design software and checks those prepared by subordinates; Provides technical assistance to Engineering Technicians and construction crews; Inspects construction projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; Participates in the preparation of plans, specifications, designs, and drawings for proposed engineering projects; Prepares cost estimates, time schedules, and material specifications for proposed engineering projects; Develops, researches, and compiles informational material relevant to highway projects; Prepares and maintains a variety of records, reports, and statistics; May perform snow removal and ice control duties when required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering; Good knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of highway and bridge construction; Good knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of land survey; Skill in the use of modern surveying and drafting instruments and equipment; Ability to perform mathematical computations; Ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; Ability to perform close, detail work involving considerable visual effort and concentration; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to operate a personal computer and utilize common office software programs; Ability to participate in assigned projects and lay out work for others; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: ---PAGE BREAK--- Senior Engineering Technician Page 2 I 2 Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s degree or higher in construction technology, mechanical technology, or closely related field and two years of experience surveying, drafting, or related technical work; OR Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and four years of experience as defined in OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
