Equipment Maintanance Mechanic Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 Amended: 5/1/18; 11/16/22 EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE MECHANIC DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing repairs requiring a high level of skill to diesel and gasoline powered, self-propelled and non self-propelled motor driven equipment, vehicles and stationary equipment. This class differs from Automotive Mechanic by virtue of required knowledge of and skill in maintaining fuel injection and supercharging systems common to diesel powerplants, as well as making overall repairs to a wide range of heavy equipment commonly used in highway construction and maintenance. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be done with leeway allowed for the use of independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Performs skilled operations in repairing and overhauling diesel and large displacement gasoline powered motor equipment including trucks, tractors, loaders, bulldozers and power shovels; Repairs and replaces oil and fuel pumps, alternators, fuel injectors, superchargers and water pumps; Replaces engine block cylinder liners; Installs replacement main bearings and crankshafts; Adjusts connecting rods and bearings; Diagnoses trouble and repairs or overhauls, brakes, transmissions, clutches, electrical and hydraulic systems, front and rear axles; Adjusts steering mechanisms, aligns wheels and repairs vehicle bodies and frames; Maintains sand spreaders, snowblowers, arc welders, portable compressors, and other power equipment; Operates a variety of construction equipment to determine problems and insure repairs are made properly; Maintains inspection and service records; Mounts and dismounts snowplow blades and other auxiliary equipment; May use an arc welder or acetylene torch to make repairs; May instruct others in diesel engine servicing procedures; May operate equipment and perform other maintenance activities as necessary. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of gas/diesel and large displacement gasoline engines and methods associated with their maintenance; Good knowledge of terminology, tools and safety precautions associated with automotive maintenance; Good knowledge of the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of repair shop equipment; Working knowledge of machine shop procedures; Ability to make repairs to gas/diesel powerplants; ---PAGE BREAK--- Equipment Maintanance Mechanic Page 2 I 2 Ability to accurately diagnose mechanical, electrical and hydraulic problems for gasoline and diesel powered equipment; Ability to read and interpret technical motor equipment repair manuals, circuit diagrams and blueprints; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with vehicle and traffic laws; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: Graduation from a recognized two year full time educational program in the maintenance and repair of highway related equipment; OR Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND two years of full time paid experience as a skilled mechanic on highway related equipment; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and NOTE: Successful completion of a certified training course in diesel engine repair offered by a New York State approved technical training institute may be substituted for one year of experience described above. NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency. Possession of a valid New York State Class B Driver's License with air brake and tank endorsement is required. Failure to maintain a NYS Class B Commercial Driver's License and all the required endorsements will result in disciplinary action or dismissal. 2. Must possess within six months of reporting to work a New York State vehicle inspection license and a New York State Class A driver's license with air brakes, tank and hazmat endorsements.
