Landfill Equipment Operator Page 1 I 1 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: 10/20/05 Amended: 12/11/12; 8/8/24 LANDFILL EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the skilled operation and routine maintenance of specialized heavy motor equipment assigned to the County Landfill. Activities are performed outdoors year-round, under all weather conditions. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Landfill Operations Supervisor and according to established procedures and techniques. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Operates landfill compactor, bulldozer, rubber-tired scraper and similar motor equipment used at a landfill facility; Operates a snowplow when necessary; Performs general maintenance on assigned motor equipment; May respond to questions, complaints, etc. from individuals using the landfill; May transport leachate in a tank truck; Performs related manual labor as required. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy motor equipment; Good knowledge of the landfill operation; Good knowledge of safety precautions required and hazards involved in the operation of heavy motor equipment; Skilled in the operation of heavy motor equipment; Ability to perform routine maintenance on assigned motor equipment; Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; Ability to deal effectively with the public; Willingness to work under adverse weather conditions; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: One of experience in the operation of heavy motor equipment or highway construction equipment. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated. Failure to maintain a NYS driver’s license including driving privileges throughout employment will result in disciplinary action or dismissal.
