NYS MODULE 3 Hose Advancement Evolution 1: GOAL The candidate, given a complete set of PPE and SCBA, while working as part of a four-member engine company, will advance a handline from a simulated doorway of a residential structure, down a simulated hallway with both a right and a left turn, to reach another, simulated interior doorway of a room and operate such handline and flow water until a target has been hit. OBJECTIVES At the completion of this module, the candidate shall: 1. Stretch and operate a charged handline; 2. Operate a charged handline while in complete PPE and activated SCBA; and 3. Work and communicate as part of a team DESCRIPTION The doors and hallways are simulated by the use of several traffic cones laid out in a pattern; two cones approximately 3 feet apart as the entry “door”; a cone approximately 15’-20’ away from the doorway, simulating a corner; another cone 10’-15’ away from and at right angles to the first cone simulating another corner; and two cones approximately 15’-20’ away from and at right angles to the last corner (simulating the interior room entry door). The “target” is a final cone, approximately 15’ away from the interior doorway. When ready (full PPE and activated SCBA and PASS), the hose is charged and bled-off. The engine company indicates readiness and the supervising instructor states “Go” (and tracks the starting time). The crew enters the “doorway” and proceeds down the hallways until reaching the doorway to the interior room, at which time the nozzle may be opened. Timing “stops” when the target cone is knocked over. Elapsed time is recorded. The engine company has several restrictions in this evolution: 1. All company members must remain on their knees (to simulate staying low in smoke conditions). ---PAGE BREAK--- 2. The last company member may NOT enter the exterior doorway, although that company member may stand. 3. The supervising instructor will add 5 seconds to the elapsed time for each time a company member OR the hoseline touches a cone. This evolution should be run TWICE by each company, in order for the company to self-evaluate and plan the second evolution. Best times from each engine company in the course should be recorded and compared. Some award should attach to the best performing company. Evolution 2: GOAL The candidate, given PPE and SCBA in a simulated smoke environment, will advance a charged hoseline as part of an engine company through a structure to a designated target area, operate such handline and flow water until a target has been hit. OBJECTIVES At the completion of this module, the candidate shall: 1. Stretch and operate a charged handline; 2. Operate a handline in an obscured visibility environment while in complete PPE and activated SCBA; and 3. Work and communicate as part of a team. DESCRIPTION The purpose of this evolution is to have the candidate, while working as part of a four member engine company, advance a handline in a simulated residential structure, such as a training building, to reach a room with a simulated fire. The simulated building is filled with training smoke, such as ROSCO or similar authorized artificial, training smoke. THIS IS NOT A LIVE FIRE EVOLUTION AND BURN BARRELS OR OTHER LIVE FIRE SMOKE IS NOT AUTHORIZED. This evolution should be conducted after Evolution 1 of this NYS Module. A flare or fusee may be used in the target “fire room” to simulate the fire for target purposes. This evolution may be run in several different ---PAGE BREAK--- configurations, such as a first floor fire, a basement fire and a second floor fire.
