F A C T S H E E T What are NY SMART Grants? Governor Pataki has announced $19.5 million in funding for small, medium and large manufacturing firms to upgrade the skills of new and incumbent workers. These grants, called Skilled Manufacturing Resource Training (SMART), target segments of the manufacturing sector. The programs help companies underwrite the costs of maintaining cutting-edge skills on the factory floor. They are part of the Governor’s on-going program to keep New York competitive in the global economy. The NY SMART grants program contains $8.5 million for employers of fewer than 100 workers. They are eligible for grants of up to $50,000. How does a business qualify for a NY SMART grant? The NY SMART grant programs will consider applications for reimbursement of training costs for new or incumbent workers. Eligible companies are private-sector, for-profit manufacturing firms that have employees working in New York State and have at least one physical location in New York State at the time of the proposal. Management staff of companies with fewer than 100 employees must attend a New York Department of Labor- sponsored seminar before they apply for SMART. The seminar, which offers participants free manufacturing optimization training, will be offered throughout the state. What kind of training programs do the NY SMART grants programs cover? The NY SMART grants will reimburse companies for traditional classroom instruction, distance learning, in-house courses and computer-based lessons. How long does each contract last? Is there a deadline? The Labor Department awards contracts for a period of one year. We will accept applications for SMART grants until June 30, 2005. How will I receive the funding? The Department will reimburse contractors for training program expenditures. Contractors must submit vouchers for reimbursement of costs that have been incurred and paid, in accordance with an approved budget.
