Building Maintenance Foreperson Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 9/12/01 Amended: 7/24/08; 12/11/12; 10/21/22 BUILDING MAINTENANCE FOREPERSON DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the operation of the maintenance portion of the Buildings and Grounds Department. The incumbent plans, directs and participates in buildings and grounds maintenance activities. The work is performed under supervision of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds with wide leeway for independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over the work of the Building Maintenance Mechanics and Building Maintenance Workers. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Leads and participates in renovating and building projects, including painting, carpentry and repair of walls and ceilings; Directs and participates in the installation and repair of electrical and plumbing fixtures; Leads and participates in general grounds maintenance activities, including snow removal; Makes inspections of properties to ascertain repair needs and develops cost estimates of said repairs; Creates and administers work schedules to ensure the timely completion of tasks; Maintains inventory of supplies and tools necessary to complete all aspects of building maintenance; Ensures that proper, efficient and safe methods of performing repairs and renovations are being adhered to; Acts in the absence of the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds; May supervise Senior Cleaner, Custodians, and Cleaners. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Ability to supervise work of others engaged in building and grounds maintenance activities; Thorough knowledge of standard building maintenance and repair practices; Good knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and safety procedures used in the maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds; Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; Dependability; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: Possession of an Associate’s degree or higher in construction technology, business administration, mechanic technology or related field and one year of supervisor experience; OR Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency diploma and two years of experience in general construction and one year of supervisor experience; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as described in and above. ---PAGE BREAK--- Building Maintenance Foreperson Page 2 I 2 NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
